Infant Massage
“The greatest sense in our body is our touch sense. It is probably the chief sense in the process of sleeping and waking; it gives us our knowledge of depth or thickness and form; we feel, we love and hate, are touchy and are touched, through the touch corpuscles of our skin.”
J. L. Taylor, 1921
When a baby cries, a parent’s instinct is to pick him up, soothe him and comfort him with touch. Touch is a basic human need and it’s so simple and powerful. By learning a few simple, gentle techniques, you can routinely confer on your baby the physical and psychological benefits of massage. Infant massage has been practiced in other countries for centuries but has only been widely done in North America in the past twenty years.
Infant massage helps parents learn how to read their infant’s cues and respond to their baby more readily. It is a pleasant way to help baby’s development in a variety of ways while enhancing the infant-parent bond. Some benefits include:· Relieves stress through increased relaxation for both you and your baby
· Stimulates the circulatory, nervous, and gastrointestinal systems of the body
· Provides sensory stimulation, which is necessary for growth and development
· Helps facilitate motor coordination
· Helps relieve colic and gas
· Helps baby sleep deeper and longer by regulating sleeping patterns
· Helps strengthen the immune system
· Provides individual focuses time
· A means of communication between the caregiver and the baby
Taking a course in infant massage is a very good way to start the routine of massaging your baby daily. I provide a warm and comfortable environment with as little distraction as possible for you and your baby to learn massage techniques tailored just for them. The best time to introduce infant massage is as early as newborn to walking age, but it’s never too late to start. I offer private or group classes at my clinic. All you need is edible oil such as safflower or olive and an appointment to be on your way to a more massage filled life. Contact me today for more information or to answer any of your questions.
